Disclaimer: Informational content only. Not legal, tax, financial or investment advice. Always verify with a licensed professional in Puerto Rico. Data comes from public sources — mainly each firm's website or, for doctors, the directory cited on the listing — and may change.
Before you hire a professional in Puerto Rico, you can confirm for free in an official registry that their license is current. This guide lists where to look for each profession. It is general information, not legal or tax advice, and the official registry always prevails.
CPAs (certified public accountants)
The Puerto Rico Board of Accountancy (Junta Examinadora de Contadores Públicos Autorizados), part of the Department of State, rests on Act No. 293 of May 15, 1945, as amended, and has designated NASBA to handle CPA licensing and renewals. Search the CPA by name in CPAverify, NASBA's database, and confirm the Puerto Rico license shows as active. The Board warns that a current license is required to practice as a CPA, and that professional-services entities must also apply for a license with the Board.
Lawyers and notaries
The Judiciary's Registro Único de Abogados y Abogadas (RUA) centralizes information on the people authorized by the Supreme Court to practice law and notarial work in Puerto Rico.
Doctors
The Junta de Licenciamiento y Disciplina Médica grants the license; you can check it in the ORCPS license verification tool. Step by step: how to confirm your doctor is licensed.
Insurance and title companies
The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCS) regulates insurance licenses. For our insurance and title listings we check the producer or agency license in the public NAIC State Based Systems lookup, choosing Puerto Rico as the jurisdiction.
Real estate brokers
The Real Estate Board (Junta de Corredores, Vendedores y Empresas de Bienes Raíces) rests on Act No. 10 of April 26, 1994, as amended, and licenses salespersons, brokers and firms. Licenses can be looked up in the PCS online licensing lookup, the portal the Board uses. The portal itself says its content is for information only and that certified information must be requested from the Department of State.
Financial advisors and brokers
Look up the person or firm in FINRA BrokerCheck and in the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure. Check whether they are registered and whether they have disclosures (such as complaints or regulatory actions).
Businesses and corporations
In the Department of State's Registry of Corporations you can search an entity by name and see its status (for example, active or cancelled). Being registered is not the same as holding a professional license.
How we do it in this directory
Each listing shows the source we used and the date we checked it. A license can change after that date, so confirm it yourself in the official registry before hiring. Read how we verify and how we rank featured listings. If you see an error, report it.
Listings by category: CPAs, lawyers, insurance, title, real estate and financial advisors.
