If a plumber, electrician, cabinet maker or contractor failed you — incomplete or defective work, or work charged but never done — you can file a complaint with DACO (Department of Consumer Affairs).

Before filing

  1. Verify the contractor's registration in the DACO Contractor Registry. DACO's official remodeling brochure recommends confirming registration and checking for prior complaints.
  2. Document everything: written contract or quote, photos of the work, receipts and messages.
  3. Claim in writing first to the contractor (letter or email) and keep evidence. Per the same DACO brochure, put your reasons in writing; if there is no agreement, you may then file a complaint.
  4. If they do not respond or resolve it, proceed with DACO.

How to file

  1. Use DACO's online services, or download and print the official general complaint form (for construction work, also the construction complaint form) and file it at a DACO office.
  2. Fill in your details, the business details and a description of the facts with dates.
  3. Attach your evidence (contract, photos, receipts and the written claim).
  4. DACO notifies the other party and may summon both to an administrative hearing.
