The PEI (Programa Educativo Individualizado / Individualized Education Program) is the document defining the educational and related services your child will receive. It is drafted by the COMPU (Comité de Programación y Ubicación / Programming and Placement Committee), and you, as parent or guardian, are a committee member with the right to participate in all decisions.

What the PEI must contain

During the meeting

Ask for each part to be explained in plain language. If you disagree with something, say so and ask that it be recorded in the minutes. You do not have to sign if you are not satisfied: you can ask for time to review the document or request another meeting. You have the right to receive copies of all documents discussed.

After the meeting

Review the signed PEI, keep a copy and note review dates. The PEI is reviewed at least once a year, and you can request a meeting at any time if your child's needs change. If the Department does not comply with what was agreed, see the parents' rights guide.
