Disclaimer: Informational content only. Not legal, tax, financial or investment advice. Always verify with a licensed professional in Puerto Rico. Data comes from public sources — mainly each firm's website or, for doctors, the directory cited on the listing — and may change.
Before hiring a therapist or psychologist, verify they hold a current license in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, no one may practice psychology without authorization from the Board of Examiners of Psychologists, and each therapy profession has its own board and registry.
Where to verify
- Psychologists, physicians and health professionals: the ORCPS (Office of Regulation and Certification of Health Professionals) online license verification portal of the Department of Health: orcps.salud.pr.gov/mbps/verificacion. You may also ask the professional for a copy of their Registration Certification, and for official documentation on status and possible restrictions, request a license verification certification (good standing) from the Board.
- Other professions regulated by the Department of State (including brokers and several technical professions): the license search portal at pr.pcshq.com/lookup/en/.
What to check
- Exact name: it must match the professional who will treat you, not just the center's name.
- License number: note it and compare with the one the professional provides.
- Status: it must read ACTIVE or equivalent. If it reads expired, suspended or does not appear, do not hire until clarified.
- Expiration date: the license must be current on the date of service.
- Profession and specialty: verify the license matches the therapy you need (speech-language, occupational, physical, psychology).
Warning signs
- The professional will not give you their license number.
- The registry name does not match who treats you.
- The license appears under another person or another center.
- The center does not identify any licensed professional on its page.
On Puerto Rico Experts
Each listing in the special education & therapy category shows the license number, the name as it appears in the registry, the expiration date and a link to the official source, so you can repeat the verification yourself.
