Advertising is generally deductible
Advertising and marketing for your business, such as a paid directory plan, is generally deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense. In Puerto Rico this comes from the Internal Revenue Code of 2011, Section 1033.01(a). For U.S. federal taxes, IRS regulations list advertising among business expenses (26 CFR 1.162-1; Publication 334).
- The expense must relate to your business and be common and appropriate for your line of work.
- Keep your invoices and receipts. Stripe emails a receipt for every payment.
- In Puerto Rico, if you are taxed under the alternate or minimum tax, advertising is only deductible if it appears on the informative returns the Code requires.
