North and South Carolina have led U.S. domestic migration gains in recent Census estimates, and Raleigh and Charlotte have fast-growing Hispanic communities. Coming from Puerto Rico, you are a U.S. citizen moving between states, so the work is practical.
1. Driver license
North Carolina licenses are handled by NCDMV (part of NCDOT) and South Carolina's by SCDMV. Both require new residents to switch to a state license within a set period after moving; check the official new-resident pages for the current deadline and document list before you go, and bring original identity and residency documents.
2. Car
Get state auto insurance first, then title and register the car with the state DMV. Cars shipped from San Juan usually arrive in Jacksonville, Florida (Crowley's southern port) or Eddystone, Pennsylvania, and then travel by truck to the Carolinas.
3. Household goods
Ocean shipping from the island plus an inland leg means two parts to coordinate. Ask for a written quote covering both and an itemized inventory. See our movers.
4. Schools
Wake County, Charlotte-Mecklenburg and New Hanover County each run their own districts. Expect to show proof of address, birth certificate, immunization records and transcripts from your Puerto Rico school.
5. Voting and taxes
Register to vote with the NC State Board of Elections or the SC Election Commission. Unlike Florida and Texas, both Carolinas have a state income tax, and your first year will usually be split with Puerto Rico's Hacienda, which is a good reason to talk to a bilingual CPA.
